ACLB: What's in "it" for you? Whether you're a Library Trustee, or a Library Director, ACLB the Association of Connecticut Library Boards is still, especially for you. For more than 40 years, ACLB has served Connecticut library Trustees and Directors with ongoing programs and services including such diverse subjects as: Advocacy; Board Organization; Board Training; Budget; Documentation; Effective Meetings; Evaluation; Job Descriptions; Legal Issues; Legal Responsibilities; Marketing; Planning; Policy Development; Recruitment of New Trustees; Staff Compensation; Personnel Issues; and Working with the Director. These programs and services were accomplished by providing ACLB members with the ACLB Connecticut Public Library Trustees Handbook; meetings with the Boards of individual libraries, consultations, and presentations at the annual ACLB Leadership Conference. Although this year we have determined that it would be necessary for us to forego our scheduled Leadership Conference for 2009. Coincidentally, our planned theme was “Tapping the Money Tree – with emphasis on how to secure contributory and grant funding especially in these troublesome economic times.” Coincidentally it was these “troublesome economic times” which hit Connecticut libraries particularly hard that we were unable to secure a minimum required audience to defray the expenses of the Conference. This cancellation does not mean the "end" of our Leadership Conference, merely a "postponement" from 2009. Be assured, however, that ACLB is "alive and well" and has, and will continue to have, a great deal of continuing and new services useful to the Connecticut Library Trustees and Library Directors alike. We are planning ACLB opportunities and activities that may very well be more important and useful than ever considering the extraordinary pressure of budget and staff limitations. Toward that end, ACLB has expanding its own Board compliment and capability - we have enabled the addition of Library Directors, retired yet still active in the profession, as members of the ACLB Board. This will broaden the ACLB Board experience to better serve the needs of its members and the Connecticut Library Community at large. In addition we are working toward instituting an “ACLB Trustee Certification Program." Working with members of the ACLB Board and a task force of other Trustees and Directors, ACLB is designing a core curriculum and certification program. By participating in and completing the program, Trustees will gain the knowledge needed to do their jobs more effectively and be recognized for their efforts. The bottom line of this program will be to enable libraries to better provide excellent services to their communities as supported by its “Certified” Trustees. ACLB holds "liaison membership" representation on the Boards of the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Friends of Connecticut Libraries (FOCL) as well as with the Connecticut State Library (CSL). These relationships help broaden the ACLB capability in its service to its membership. Please contact us by email at info@aclb.org for any questions, or other information you may have. |
